Well, well.

Look who made it to day 4, huh?

I gotta admit, I didn’t think you were going to be able to keep up.

I bet you expect some prize for hanging out with me this long, right?

Well, you got it.

Two new restaurants, and they’re opposite styles similar to yesterday’s time traveling adventure.

One brand spanking new, the other could collapse at any minute.

Stop 1: New Bkkfatty Facebook Page

But before I forget, here’s a new facebook page for you. As you see we like to eat more than Thai food and there may be some bacon related things on the new page haha. Most importantly we want to interact with you there, so we’ll be posting your twitter photos and maybe even doing some small events in the future.

Go be a part of the first crew to LIKE our new Bkkfatty page!

Stop 2: The Local by Oam Thong Thai Cuisine’s Tasting Museum on Sukhumvit 23

The Local: Thai Food Museum or Restaurant?

“The Local” is kind of an odd name, but what you need to know is this is pretty much a living, tasting museum. The owners of the restaurant have done everything the could to evoke the past both with the decor and the food.

Even though they’re still in their soft opening phase, lunch time can be quite busy. I recommend you book ahead and if you have a group then try and get into one of their uniquely decorated VIP rooms.

Floating Market Themed Vip Room at The Local by Oam Thong Thai Cuisine

In the VIP room, feeling VIP and all super fancy until I just about drooled all over the menu. Thank God for those cloth napkins they keep nearby.

The menu has some ancient recipes, some restored from Thailand’s archives. There are familiar items on the menu, but I could tell pretty quickly that The Local is best enjoyed by people who really love and know Thai food already. This is a place which will most likely be very popular with Thais, but I’m not sure how people new to Thailand and Thai food’s complexity will like the food. The servers will have to be very good at introducing and explaining the recipes which each seem to have an interesting story behind them.

Complimentary watermelon appeti-teaser

First out the door was a complimentary appeti-teaser with watermelon lightly flavored with a mixture made of salt, sugar, onions, dried fish and more (แตงโมปลาแห้ง).

Honestly if you’re new to Thai food, I have a feeling you’ll think this is bizarre. But this type of appetizer dates back to pre-air conditioned Thailand and is meant to both cool you off and prepare the palate for the coming dinner. Which is exactly what it did for the coming lemongrass salad with wild betal leaves Many of the flavors that were subtle on the watermelon, came full force in the salad.

Lemongrass salad with wild betal leaves ยำตะไคร้สามเกลอใต้ at The Local by Oam Thong

I loved this dish and had to actually have the waitress to bring more betal leaves because I ran out. When I come back, I’m definitely having this salad again and I recommend it to you to get things started.

My first time to try this Thai Southern style curry

Next we had a curry the waitress recommended and seemed to get my Thai friends excited when she suggested this dish. The curry was slight soupy (not nearly like yesterday’s episode) and in the center was a pile of tender, thinly sliced beef.

Scarily Beautiful Three Flavors Fish at The Local

We would have fought over the curry, had not this fish been served shortly after. Now, if you’re not too familiar with Thai food, this is the first dish you may recognize, called three flavors fish I’ve had so many interpretations of this dish, but this by far was the best. At The Local, it’s presented using the fish carcass as decoration, with all the meat the fish on the side in the sticky, tangy sauce.

Train of homemade Thai style ice cream scoops.

Last but not least! An ice cream platter which is a three scoop train of mango, coconut, and Thai tea ice cream with a tamarind stick, cantaloupe and sticky rice! Good thing I brought back up!

Honestly, I will have to go back the Local to try more of their food. Most of the dishes, save the fish, were on the exotic side because it was exciting to try and taste them.

Everything was good, but some of the dishes like the fish and the lemongrass salad overshadowed the others. While it was more expensive than most of my Thai meals at about $40 (1,300 THB) for three dishes and a dessert, it was worth it and I’ll be back with some other curious foodies in tow next time. It’s located on Sukhumvit 23, see the map below.

Stop 3: Sri Nuan Everything Stall, Starring the Thaidashian Sisters

Late night was supposed to be a street food tour down Rama 4 road, but the rain meant I had to stay near home. That’s no problem because there’s a special place I love for great, cheap food called Sri Nuan ศรีนวล ตามสั่ง which is a short walk from my house.

The Thaidashians and their everything stall at Sri Nuan

Unlike The Local, Sri Nuan’s not that pretty to look at. The same is true of the food. But as is usually the case, what this “Everything-Stall” lacks in eye candy, it makes up for in character, taste and price.

For starters there’s twin sisters and a helper that are really bubbly and excited about making me try EVERYTHING. I refer to them secretly as the Thaidashian sisters because I’m pretty sure they could talk me into eating anything they make.

A Thaidashian girl with great thighs!

At the top of that list is their grilled chicken, which I like to have them put in their made to order dishes.

I call it an everything stall because they’re catering to so many tastes all at once. There’s Northeastern Thai food, Southern Thai food, and plenty of made to order items.

This is the type of food that starts wars.

The flavors are strong and unadulterated. But everything else I’m about to show you is ugly AND delicious. Keep an open mind fatties, you’re in the advanced class now!

Tastiest vomit ever! You've gotta try!

First up the vomity dish known as “nam prik bla yang” which is a sauce with grilled fish and Thai’s favorite strong sauces (which includes a dump truck of chilies). You eat this with a ton of veggies because it’s so spicy. So I tried to dress it up and make it look better, so you’ll know what to eat it with.

All dressed up, would you feast with me now?

Any better?

Nah, didn’t think so. But it’s still a must try.

Sigh. Ok, only one more ugly dish for you. We’ll have to revisit this place when your heart’s a little stronger.

Ooh look, there's eggs and pork in this sewer water!

Eggs and crispy pork soaked in ‘paloe’ sauce! Hideous and tasty!

If the place above is The Local, this place should probably be called The Super Local. The neighborhood is obscure, they don’t close until about 3AM. There’s beer and karaoke inside and Thai whisky sold not to far away. Anyway, put it on your radar and if you’re really feeling like exploring some place new, the Thaidashian girls will be happy to see you.

The grab and go curries are usually around 20 THB and there’s snacks around 10 THB each. I ordered three dishes, plus had them put their grilled chicken in drunken noodles (not a normal order) and I spent less than $5 (120 THB).

STUPID CHEAP.

Here’s the slice of our Bangkok Food Map that you need to find both places!

Now I do have a lot of favorite Thai dishes, but nothing pleases me more than a southern Thai food feast.
It’s not that tomatoey sweet and sour gaeng som, the southern version is pungently sour and explosively hot, flavored with chillies and fresh turmeric root.

What’s Thai breakfast food?

Hard boiled egg? Kanom jeen? Chicken biryani?

The truth is there’s no such thing.

There's no such thing as thai breakfast food, not even kanom jeen (ขนมจีนน้ำยา)

As Mark alludes in this week’s 13 Most Popular Thai Dishes for Breakfast, Thais hardly make any time based distinction between food groups like breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

The thai word used for breakfast (ahaan chow อาหารเช้า) roughly translates as “morning food.”

In fact, if we really wanted to vigorously categorize Thai food, we would be far more accurate to group foods by what you eat when semi-hungry, drunk, or avoiding the dreaded ‘ring of fire.’

Well, maybe there are a few good things that happen in the morning...

You love Thai food? Then forget about breakfast.

Let’s take an elusive plate of Thai street food style chicken biryani with saffron rice (kow mok gai ข้าวหมกไก่) as an example.

The vendor dealing this plate of yellow intoxication can be found across the street from Bangkok’s Hindu Temple, but she’s only there for early risers and by 9am she’s sold out.

You show up, looking like an extra from The Walking Dead, at 8:55am and can hear the woman who runs the stall scraping the giant boiler to fill up the last few plates. The other zombies who showed up after you, get in line inquiring over your head, “Is it all gone yet?”

“Almost,” the vendor answers as she scrapes.

Scraping the bottom of a giant boiler of biryani by 9am

The ungodly hour, the antsy people behind you, and the threatening scraping of the pot are all colluding to convince you this food is better in the morning.

Snap out of it! While you may have to get up occasionally for a biryani fix, there’s no reason to go around trying to make it a regular thing.

Anyway, neither the infamous biryani or the common kanom jeen are likely to be the “morning food” westerners think of as breakfast.

This is not only great news for the few liberated minds among us who recognize NOTHING good happens before 9am, but also to foodies who appreciate the freedom to eat all manor of deliciousness around the clock!

Marked by a few pods of Sataw (stink beans popular to eat in southern food) sitting in the door way and an aroma of turmeric root and a fusion of delicious humid fumes I stepped inside Lan Song Palinya Gaeng Pak Dtai

Tip: It’s always good to eat southern Thai food in the morning or for lunch when the food is still fresh and somewhat hot.

The friendly owner of the restaurants cheerfully waited as I took a few photos of her food and decided on a few of the dishes I would sample for the day.

Everything looked awesome.

Plate of Rice and Kai Dtom Yang Matum

We started things off with fresh steamed rice and Kai Dtom Yang Matum (ไข่ต้มยางมะตูม) – hard boiled egg made with an egg yolk that is slightly orangey and saltier than normal.

Gaeng Taypo (แกงเทโพ)

The Gaeng Taypo (แกงเทโพ), though slightly on the cold side was excellent.

Gaeng Taypo a milky sour curry filled with morning glory vegetables and fried fish. The chunks or deep fried fish were still crispy on the outside and flaky with just a few bones on the inside.

My mouth was already overjoyed.

One of the best Thai dishes I can’t get enough of these days is Goong Pad Sataw (กุ้งผัดสะตอ).

I actively and frequently search it out. Shrimp, stink beans (sataw) and chili curry paste is about all that goes into this one hit wonder.

Ganeg Som Nor Mai (แกงส้มหน่อไม้)

Another classic southern Thai dish is Gaeng Som, that can be made with a variety of filling ingredients. Gaeng Som Sapalot (with pineapple) is wonderful as is Gaeng Som Malago (with green papaya) and Gaeng Som Normai (with bamboo shoots like above).

It was spicy, down to earth spicy…and sour to go with that.

This Ganeg Som Nor Mai (แกงส้มหน่อไม้) was made just the way I dream of it to be: out of control spicy, ridiculously sour, and absurdly flavorful.

Nam Prik Makam (น้ำพริกมะขาม)

Lastly for this little pre-market brunch we ordered a side of Nam Prik Makam (น้ำพริกมะขาม) – tamarind based chili sauce.

One of the really nice additions to Lan Song Palinya Gaeng Pak Dtai (ร้านสองปริญญาแกงปักษ์ใต้) was that they served their raw vegetables on a huge platter sitting on each and every table – meaning you can basically eat as much of the veg as you want – nice touch in my opinion!

Kua Kling Moo

Too full, I wasn’t even able to sample some of the great looking other dishes like the Thai dry curry (Kua Kling Moo

Pla Too

Or this Pla Too and nam prik!

I guess it will have to wait for next time!

The Bottom Line

They make good solid southern Thai food, really really good. Then again, if you are making mediocre Thai food around Sam Long Market (ตลาดสำโรง), you won’t last long with all the competition around.

Their dishes are definitely on the spicy side, so if you are up for it, it’s wonderful!

Along with the gorgeous limestone pillars of stone that rise from the turquoise Andaman Sea, Krabi is also a special place for those who seek to elevate their culinary interests.

Nong Joke Restaurant ร้านน้องโจ๊ก on the edges of town is a famous restaurant that is popular with both locals and Thai tourists alike.

Tom Som Pla

Though I would have loved to order Gaeng Som (among my top things to eat in the world), because I had eaten some for lunch, I opted to try their Tom Som Pla

Tom Som Pla

I think Tom Som Pla ต้มส้มปลา is one of the sourest Thai dishes. The tangy liquid was so sour it nearly gave me goosebumps, though it was so addictive that we managed to easily slurp it all down and still wanted more.

One of my favorite forms of Thai style spicy chili sauce is Nam Prik Goong Sot The tangy sauce was loaded with shrimp and alive with accents of chili and lime juice.

I attempt to eat it at every occasion possible, especially when I’m down in Krabi.

I was excited to find Sataw Pao สะตอเผา (Roasted Stink Bean) on the menu at Nong Joke ร้านน้องโจ๊ก. They were outrageously delicious when smothered in Nam Prik sauce (pictured above).

I used to not find bitter melon very good, but after hanging out in China for a month and enjoying bitter melon almost everyday, Mala Sai Goong ผัดมะระกุ้ง (Bitter Melon with Shrimp) has been a highly attractive thing for me to eat lately.

It was stir fried with a handful of meaty shrimps and chunks of garlic and oyster sauce.

Pak Goot ผัดผักกูด is a fernlike vegetable that I had never eaten before going to Nong Joke. In English it is a particular type of Athyriaceae leafy plant – but don’t worry, I didn’t have any idea what it was either.

It was an alright green vegetables, nothing to rave about, but good.

The Bottom Line

The food is solidly good.

The restaurant is promoted as a traditional cuisine restaurant to all Thai tourists visiting Krabi and it doesn’t fail to consistently deliver top quality seafood dishes and local favorites.

You should strive to eat at Nong Joke when in Krabi.

Among my favorite restaurants in Thailand (and in the world for that matter) is a little neighborhood restaurant in Krabi town known as Lan Nong Jane

The family run dinner establishment serves a few dishes that are entirely worth the try.

I’ve eaten here numerous times, and it was one of my standard restaurants when I lived in Krabi for a month a year ago.

One of the best things about Krabi is the quality of fresh seafood. The shrimp the cook uses in dishes like Goong Pad Prik Pao กุ้งผัดพริกเผา are meaty and he takes care to never overcook them so they aren’t rubbery.

Yam Woon Sen Ruam Mit

Lan Nong Jane serves by far the best Yam Woon Sen Ruam Mit I’ve personally every treid. It is absolutely everthing I could ask for when it comes to spicy mung bean salad.

Yam Woon Sen Ruam Mit

The cook uses a generous southern Thai style amount of Thai chilies and the dish is heavy on sour lime juice. The combination of fresh and cooked ingredients, the seafood, and the pungent dressing makes the mung bean noodles shockingly good.

Pad Tamlung Sai Kai

Tamlung (Ivy Gourd Leaves), along with Pak Gachet, is one of my favorite leafy green vegetables in all of Thailand. Normally in Bangkok it is served in plain Gaeng Jued clear vegetable soup.

At Lan Nong Jane, ivy gourd leaves are seared with hot oil on a flaming wok (Pad Tamlung Sai Kai ผัดตำลึงใส่ไข่). Due to the high heat, the egg instantly scrambles and is so good it could easily pass as minced meat.

After being away in China for a month, it was the comfort of Gaeng Som that I really began to crave.

Lan Nong Jane in Krabi Town makes one of the best Gaeng Som Pla Kabok Nor Mai Dong แกงส้มปลากระบอกหน่อไม่ดอง that I have ever had the priviedge of devouring.

It’s cooked with the entire fish chopped up into pieces and the soup is deeply spiced and tingly sour like it should be.

A few bites of this sweltering Gaeng Som will have you dripping with sweat and pleading for more.

Sataw, known as Stink Bean, is a fantastic little beany vegetable. Their Goong Pad Sataw กุ้งผัดสะตอ is cooked with a dab of fermented shrimp paste (kaphi) to make a thick salty (and of course) and spicy sauce.

Everything down to just a classic omelet with minced pork (Kai Jeow Moo Saap ไข่เจียวหมูสับ) is wonderful at Lan Nong Jane.

The Bottom Line

As one of my favorite restaurants in all of Thailand, I have had dreams about this restaurant.

That being said, I enjoy dishes where flavors are extremely strong and pungent. At Lan Nong Jane’s, they take spicy and sour very very seriously. If you enjoy making your taste buds dance, I would highly recommend this restaurants. However, if you aren’t so much into spicy and sourness, you might want to try a different place for dinner.

Hours: The restaurant opens at about 5:30 pm until about 10 pm for dinner

Prices: Prices are little more expensive than normal Thai street food, mainly because of the generous amounts and quality of seafood. Seafood dishes cost 120 – 160 THB and vegetables dishes are around 60 THB.

How to Get There

Lan Nong Jane ร้านน้องเจน is located about a 10 minute walk from the center of Krabi Town, on the main road. From the Mall just head north on Maharaj and the restaurant is located right after a large Chinese Temple complex.

Today I just wanted to share a few photos from Krabi’s bustling Maharaj Market.

The market starts up way early in the morning, I think about 3 am, and doesn’t wind down until around 10 am. A good time to visit is the 7 – 8 am range.

The newly renovated Maharaj Market in Krabi is nicely organized and despite its heavy traffic, the market is clean and easy to navigate. There are sections for fruit, vegetables, fish, meat, dry food stuffs, and a huge breakfast pre-made food area.

Bananas at Maharaj Market

Southern Thailand, just like other places like Kota Kinabalu in SE Asia are blessed by an abundance of fresh produce and seas that teem with fish.

Banana vendors seem to have an infinite number of bananas, all lined up and waiting to be purchased.

Southern Thailand Chili Peppers

Chilies are worshipped in southern Thai food.

These little neon colored yellow, red and green chillies are slightly different and a bit more pungent from normal Thai chilies. They are one of my favorite chili peppers!

Turmeric Root - Maharaj Market, Krabi, Thailand

Turmeric root, though not overly common in northern Thai food, is used heavily in southern dishes like Gaeng Som (sour hot soup). There are piles of turmeric all over the Maharaj Market.

Maharaj Market - Krabi, Thailand

Southern Thai food is quite different from Isaan food and it’s always amazing to me that they use an entire different realm of natural vegetables, stalks and herbs in their cooking.

Pile of Coconuts in Krabi

Coconuts, just like bananas and pineapples (and other tropical fruits), are in abundance throughout the market.

Dried Fish

Due to Krabi’s Andaman sea location, fish and other gems from the sea are what I strive to eat when I’m there. I love walking around fish markets!

The seafood section in the market is filled with loads of fish varieties including dried and fresh.

Cutting Fresh Fish in Krabi, Thailand

Like other fish markets, you have the choie of either buying your fish whole, or having a fishmonger scrape off the scales and de-gut it for you

Fish at the Fish Market in Krabi

This peculiar fish was stuffed with other smaller fish, or did it attempt to eat them all??

Stingray

Stingray is a popular fish throughout Southeast Asia. I’ve actually never eaten it at a restaurant in Thailand, but I did have it a few times while traveling in Malaysia.

Giant Shellfish

I don’t really know what this giant shelled beast is, but it was HUGE – about the diameter of a basketball! The meat flowing out of its shell looked almost like a cow liver.

Fuktong Sangkaya

Among the assortment of local speciality snacks and sweets, there are also a few classic Thai desserts like Fuktong Sangkaya.

Khao Mok Neua at Maharaj Morning Market

My favorite part of Maharaj Market is of course the section where freshly cooked food is served. There are loads of dishes to choose from.

So if you’re ever in Krabi Town, head over to the Maharaj Morning Market for a bit of observation and don’t forget to come hungry so you can eat a giant breakfast!
